The Lithuanian Union of Democrats was founded on January 29th, 2022. The new political force was established due to the lack of true leadership and competence in the Government, the fear of growing radicalism. It is a centre-left political force led by former Prime Minister of Lithuania Saulius Skvernelis. The Union of Democrats is the third-largest group in the Parliament of Lithuania and has representatives in majority of municipalities. Dialogue, democracy, climate awarness, social justice, and solidarity are the principles upon which the party bases its policies. The Democrats have nominated current European Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius as a leading candidate in the upcoming European Parliament elections.
